SEANAD ÉIREANN BYE-ELECTION 2026The Genealogical Society of Ireland is a ‘Nominating Body’ for Seanad Éireann (Senate) on the Education & Cultural Panel.The Society may nominate a candidate to stand in a Seanad Éireann General Election and/or a Seanad Éireann Bye-Election. This Senate bye-election was called following the election of Senator Seán Kyne to Dáil Éireann for the constituency of Galway West filling the seat vacated by the election of Catherine Connolly as President of Ireland.Each ‘Nominating Body’ may decide on the method it uses to select its nominee. The Society selected a nominee for candidature in the Seanad Éireann General Elections of 2007, 2011, 2016, 2020 and 2024.Although, the Board of Directors decided to extend the franchise to the Members of the Society, and this was endorsed by the Annual General Meeting in March 2020, this applies only to the Seanad Éireann General Elections and not to Bye-Elections. It also depends on the timeframe between the receipt of notice of the issuance of the Ministerial Order and the deadline for the nominations, for example, official notice was received yesterday, and the deadline is noon on 6th October 2026.The Board of Directors will select its nominee for candidature at its monthly meeting scheduled for Thursday 1st October 2026 at 19.00hrs (UTC+1) and it does so, for and on behalf of the ordinary Members of the Society.For clarity, a director does not have to be domiciled on the island of Ireland to vote. No proxy votes are permitted. Biographical details on all candidates will be sent by email to each director by the General Secretary and voting will be by Electronic Ballot using the Single Transferable Vote system of Proportional Representation. The result will be posted on the Society’s social media platforms after the successful applicant has been notified. The decision of the Board of Directors is final.The Official Nomination Papers for the Society’s nominee will be lodged with the Seanad Returning Officer before the deadline of noon on Tuesday 6th October 2026.Applicants MUST provide the following: full name and address, telephone number, email address, occupation, professional qualifications, details of any political affiliation and a head & shoulders photograph (passport size).Applicants MUST provide information on (1) experience and knowledge of the areas of Education and Culture; (2) educational or professional qualifications; (3) campaign priorities or general objectives and (4) reasons for seeking the Society’s nomination. No application will be considered as ineligible on grounds of race, ethnicity, dual nationality, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, religious belief, socioeconomic or employment status or membership of the Travelling Community. An applicant MUST be a citizen of Ireland.Ineligibility criteria include, (1) If the Society’s association with the applicant is likely, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, to bring the Society into disrepute or into the political fray on matters not related to the public policy objectives of the Society (see ‘Ireland’s Genealogical Gazette’ on www.familyhistory.ie); (2) If the applicant provides false or misleading information on the application, however, clarification may be sought by the Returning Officer and/or (3) If the applicant has already secured a nomination from another ‘Nominating Body’ – although, this criterion can be waived by the Board at its discretion.PLEASE NOTE: The decision of the Board of Directors is final in respect of the above and the acceptance of that position is a requirement of application.@followers
